Why Carolina's children need our benevolence?
  • Child abuse and neglect
Children and youth who experience trauma, including abuse or neglect, are at increased risk for long-term emotional, behavioral and physical health problems, among other. Importantly, the consequences of child maltreatment can be mitigated with equitable access to trauma-informed services and nurturing, lasting family relationships and support.
  • High turn-over of foster home placements
High turnover of foster homes is a significant problem, with national rates ranging from 30% to 50% annually. This high turnover can negatively impact children in foster care, leading to more placements, longer stays in the system, and potentially poorer long-term outcomes. Factors contributing to this issue include personal changes within foster families, kinship care arrangements ending, and the challenges of navigating the complex child welfare system
  • Low academic performance
A significant percentage of youth in foster care perform below grade level in math and/or reading, with some studies reporting figures ranging from 30% to 96%. Children in foster care face significant academic challenges, lower graduation rates, decreased performance on standardized tests, and increased likelihood of grade retention compared to their non-foster care peers. These issues are often linked to factors like frequent school changes, emotional and behavioral problems, and potential learning disabilities.
  • Social-emotional Irregulation
Children in foster care experience higher rates of social-emotional dysregulation compared to the general population. Up to 80% of children in foster care may have significant mental health challenges, compared to 18-22% in the general population. This includes difficulties with attachment, forming relationships, and managing emotions. Trauma exposure, frequent moves, and the stigma of foster care can contribute to these challenges.
